Models were built out of white foam core to distinguish them from the existing site model. They were built to accurate dimensions to allow for further development for our design in respect to our neighbors and the site. Questions resolved include: green space allocation, general transportation and circulation, and sun shading.

Now we have started schematic design. We are refining the image of our buildings from the concept stage. We are starting build scale representation of our design during this phase of development. This will allow us to be able to study our buildings in context with our neighbors and the historic elements within our site.

Dr. Bozorgi held a meeting during class to have a class evaluation. We graded our fellow students on their performance during the construction of the model. Each student also ranked 3 buildings that they would most like to design, on a separate sheet. This is how we will be able to decide who will design each of the twenty-one buildings. On Wednesday each master planning team will present 3 different schemes for our site. It is nice to begin the design phase of this project.

The final pieces of the model are done, and now we are moving to the masterplanning phase of the project. Our studio was split up into three teams for designing the master plan for the site, and from those three, a singular final master plan will be created.

The class is beginning to run more like a machine. The first portions of the main maidan (courtyard) were set into place. The last two of the base modules were also finished being glued and were set into place. The model should be done after the weekend. It will mean alot to us all when it is finally assembled.

Tony is leading a well coordinated effort for the completion of the group work on the base model. Everyone is staying busy. We should finish all but the main Maidan/Bazaar areas by the end of the week. It is exciting to see our work coming together in this huge model. Soon we will be finished with this model of the existing conditions and we will be able to work within our groups on the conceptual master planning of the site. Dr Bozorgi thanked us for our hard work.

Finished the first set of site buildings today. Work will continue over the weekend and hopefully model will be finished soon. Dr. Bozorgi emphasized that we needed to be spending time out of class in order to complete the base model in a reasonable amount of time.

The construction of the site started today, with Tony giving instructions on the method we would be using to construct the buildings. Others split off to work at computer stations so that we would be able to laser cut the more intricate parts of the model (arches, windtowers, etc.). An emphasis was placed on the longevity of the construction and the necessitate of making sure the model stood up over a long period of time.

We received the laser etched fiberboard pieces for the base model and proceeded to lay them on the base. Next, sanded each piece to create a more uniform look and to remove burn marks from the laser.

Today, Robert brought some of the final "Laser Etchings" for our model base. The etchings will be the base for our site model and shows the locations of existing built structures. The class began discussing Klaus Herdeg's book (link listed at right). Dr. Bozorgi also gave a short talk, in retrospect, about life in Iran that gave a glimpse back nearly six decades. We are planning to be fully underway on the base model construction by next Friday.

Dr. Bozorgi worked with the groups of students helping them formulate conceptual master planning. First, the professor emphasized the area that he felt we would focus our "brain-storming/pre-conceptual design" efforts. Also, preparartions were being made for our first group presentation on Wednesday. Tracings and color and dreams. Today, broad strokes were made in our design- the studio was alive.

Set-backs

A good portion of the class congregated at the Model Shop to view the progress made on the site model etchings. The laser cutter is faster than we expected! Back at the studio we observed that the masonite was too dark to use. We would have to use lighter wood product- like MDF. Additionally, the "Gray Plum" matte color we ordered was too purple. We made plans to replace these materials with something more suitable. Two groups were dispatched to search local lumber yards and to make telephone calls. It would be weekend without further progress.

Dr. Bozorgi treated the students to a graphic demonstration on geometry. Tony has the order of 50 sheets of matte board that we will be using for our project's existing structures. He will take to the Model Shop to be cut down. There will be a laser-cutter training session hosted at the Model Shop in the morning. In groups, we are to begin master planning the site in Kerman. By Friday we need to be diligently working to build the model. Next Wednesday, we are to present our ideas.

Today we performed a model design abstract exercise to explore and contemplate the notion of the architecture of Kerman. We learned more about space conception, which, we know (by our map) is dealing with the sub/void mapping concept. We practiced this relationship implementation and also began conception development of the master plan.

We met at for our weekly Wednesday meeting at the Journalism Building next to Architecture at OU. We were treated to a multimedia presentaiton by Dr. Bozorgi showcasing the internal design architecture of Kerman. Following Dr. Bozorgi's presentation, William gave us a short updated computer representation of our site and what groups we would be in when we start constructing the model

Due to vigilant hard work of a few at the model shop the base was completed today. They pieces arrived mid day through class and we went to work making space and sliding in the wood modules. The model was intended to be over 28ft long but after looking at the size in the class room we decided to take off the last row of panels from the site. The team at the model shop did a great job, and our next step is to secure the matte-board and masonite materials and start modeling.

Today we finally narrowed down the final materials for the site. We brought in example material models to see how they would visually react with each other and to see the feasibility of there construction. We narrowed down are choices between chipboard, matte-board, Plexiglas, and wood. After seeing them next to each other and having an active discussion, it was decided that matte-board would be our best option in terms of construction and price. The base should be coming in later today so that will be our next step.

Dr. Bozorgi wishes to have a nice blue background when we take pictures of the finished site model. Therefore it was necessary to repaint some of the walls in our studio so we have that nice sky background when we take pics. Brad and Peyton are painting the walls this weekend a nice sky blue so we'll get some nice pictures over the course of this project.

Today in studo we discussed the materials we might use for the site model of Kerman. The main area of discussion was the the materials and the aesthetics of the site model and what could be professionally accomplished in a short period of time. Couple of students have already went to the model shop to start building the base. The rest of us are still deciding how to proceed with the rest of the model. We're aiming for monday to have a firm pick on the materials and hopefuly we'll have a finialized plan by next week.

Other news of the day was that William discovered that our inital scale of the autocad of the site model was incorrect and now we can fit even more of the surrounding area into the site.

Today we met with Dr. Bozorgi to see some of the work of his students in his past studios. The work was excellent and one the most important tasks we have to complete is the class site model. The site model will be very important in terms of presenting and also allowing us to see in more intimate detail the layout and configuration of the site.

We don't have a time table on the completetion of the site model but we already have cad plans of our intended area and we have the dimensions of the final model. We're looking at a model approximately 28' x 11'. It's pretty big but with proper organization we should bebale to complete pretty quickly.

This blog will cover the trials and tribulations of Professor Bozorgi's 5th year students architecture students at the University of Oklahoma.

The goal of this studio is for each student to create an building over two semesters on a site of their chosing in Kerman, Iran. While the site may be foreign to most in this studio, the lack of intimate knowledge allows a certain amount of imagination and creativity which pushes us to design something truly unique in our final year of school.
